Library Robot

To celebrate the Sheffield Festival of Science and Engineering, Library staff have worked through the night to construct their very own library robot.

Made from the very latest materials (foil and cardboard) and using state-of-the-art construction techniques (sticky tape), Library Bot represents the cutting edge in the emerging field of library-based robotics.

Here he is relaxing in his new home at St George's Library.

National Science & Engineering Week

Invention & Discovery - Stainless Steel

The theme for this year's celebration of science & engineering is invention and discovery. As part of this year's event we thought we would take a look at things invented and discovered here in Sheffield and of course we must mention stainless steel.

The city of Sheffield has played a major role in industrial history. In 1913 Sheffield's Harry Brearley discovered that adding chromium to molten iron produced a metal that did not rust – stainless steel! Stainless steel was ideal for many practical uses and in particular the manufacture of cutlery.  Over the next 100 years Sheffield’s reputation for metal production was made (Welcome to Sheffield).

This year Sheffield is celebrating 100 years since the discovery of Stainless Steel and a number of events and exhibitions are taking place throughout the year. These include...

  • Designed to Shine – 100 years of Stainless Steel an exhibition at the Millennium Gallery Sheffield (until 13th October)
If you want to find out more information about the history of stainless steel and events taking place why not take at look at the Welcome to Sheffield website

Changes in StarPlus

We are working in the background to improve our library systems.

You can now place a reservation within StarPlus, from the 'Request' tab.

However, to see the total number of copies available of a particular book, you need to click on the 'Details' tab and then the 'This item in classic Star' link on the right hand side. This is a temporary measure until we upgrade further in the next few months.

Sheffield Festival of Science & Engineering

Sheffield Festival of Science & Engineering
10-24 March 2013

The city is gearing up for the Festival of Science and Engineering, which kicks off this Sunday.

Funded and organised by Sheffield’s universities and supported by museums and industry-education groups across the city, the festival will build on our universities’ world class research and emphasise the central role played by Science and Technology in our region.

The festival ties in with National Science and Engineering week, which this year focuses on the themes of Invention and Discovery.

There are loads of events going on here at the University, and across the city, including free lectures and interactive experiments.

Have a look at the stand in St George's Library for more information and grab a copy of the festival programme.  Well be posting updates on this blog throughout the festival, so watch this space...
